Before Toto was formed The members of the band performed session work for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate, and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session percussionist Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs' 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in 1976 as a result of the collaboration.
The third album of Toto, Turn Back, marked a change from the more progressive sound of their earlier albums and was criticized for its lack of hit singles. In 1985 the group's singer Fergie Fredericksen quit The band held auditions to find a new frontman. The band selected guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.

In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by going through several old demos and tapes to release a special album called Toto XX. The album was a hit by fans and the band embarked on a tour with former members Bobby Kimball, Steve Porcaro, and Joseph Williams.
In the course of the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun the drummer Leland Sklar left the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live set titled Falling in Between, which included live recordings from the tour and an interview with Toto.
